CU Tango Music Festival

Welcome to the 2024 CU Tango Music Festival with more guest artists, more events, and more community partners.

D.C-based bandoneonist Heyni Solera and tango cellist Maxfield Wollam-Fisher continue their residency with us here in Champaign-Urbana, joined this year by bandoneonist Rodrigo Avalos from Buenos Aires, bassist Laura Camacho originally from Buenos Aires now based in Athens, GA, and violinist Teagan Faran from DePauw University. In addition, Daniela Roig returns to Champaign-Urbana and joins Hernan Prieto for dance workshops, performances, and private lessons.

Saturday, May 4
Tango with Daniela & Hernan
Location: Urbana Dance Company
Cost (per workshop): $35 (at the door)/$30 (preregistration)/$20 (student)

Turns: Mastering the giro with lapiz, enrosques, paradas and adornos
1:00 pm Workshop 2
Tango musicality: Dancing to D’Arienzo and its different layers

Beginner: Technique, walking, and simple variations for the dance floor


Festival Concert

Cost: $25 (at the door)/$20 (preregistration)/$10 (students)
The festival concert features contemporary tango music alongside gems of the Golden Age of tango. Performing music by some of the most prolific names in tango today, including Julián Peralta, Ramiro Boero, Pablo Jaurena alongside up-and-coming composers and arrangers Rodrigo Avalos, Laura Camacho, and Heyni Solera, our festival guest artist musicians explore the depth and breadth of tango music expression.


Intro to Tango Dance

Now that you're hooked on the music, are you curious about the dance? Try this free, low-commitment, judgement-free intro to tango dance class.


Festival Milonga
9:00 pm
Location: Urbana Dance Company
Cost: $30 (at the door)/$25 (preregistration)/$15 (student, non-dancer)
The festival milonga brings together our guests artists, local tango band Bandoneon Massacre, and Midwest guest musicians for a magical night celebrating the beauty and drama of tango music and dance. The milonga features music from DJ Hernan Prieto and our 20-piece festival orquesta as well as a special live-music dance performance from Daniela Roig and Hernan Prieto. You will not want to miss this one-of-a-kind evening in the enchanting ballroom at Urbana Dance Company.


Sunday, May 5
Brunch with Jam and Practice

Location: Urbana Dance Company
Cost: FREE
Bring your instrument and join our jam, or bring your dance shoes and practices those new moves, or bring a dish to share, or just bring an empty stomach and enjoy a chill Sunday brunch.
